CHAPTER 20
SEPTEMBER
Today was a rough day. My visit with Mom didnât go well. Keaton came in with me again. The last few times he said he was getting bored out in the car so he insisted on coming in. I stopped arguing with him when I noticed how much my mom liked him. He was like a buffer between us, keeping things lighter and easier than they were.
But even Keaton couldnât stop the sudden switch in her today. One second she was asking about school and if I planned to go to prom, then she turned paranoid. She thought I was wearing a wire and tried to rip my clothes off to check. I was able to escape her grasp, but only because sheâs been so weak lately. The nurses ushered us out, and Keaton took me home.
Iâve been hiding in my room since we got home. I donât want to talk to anyone, and I donât need false words of encouragement. Everything will not be okay. Itâs not going to just get better. It will only get worse and thereâs not a damn thing I can do about it.
I almost donât look at my phone when a text message chimes. I sigh and roll off my bed to grab my phone to see it was Harper.
Party @ Rocco Farm?
I chew on my lip, debating. Patrick Rocco graduated two years before us but never left town. He still lives with his parents on what used to be a farm. When the weather is nice, he throws huge parties out in their barns.
Itâs Saturday night and Keaton is already out for the night. Even Alex is at a friendâs. I should be just like every other kid my age and go out too. For one night, I want to be numb and forget about my pending birthday, my confusing foster brother, and my sick mom. My fingers fly over the screen as I tell Harper to pick me up.
By the time I ask if I can go out and get ready, Harper is already waiting in the driveway. She doesnât bother to turn down the blasting music when I slide into the front seat.
âWho pissed you off?â I shout over the music as she pulls out of the drive.
âWhy would you ask that?â
âYouâre blasting eighties rock. You only do that when a boy pisses you off.â
Harper smacks the radio off and glares at me. âBennett is stupid.â
âAll boys are stupid.â
âIâve been sleeping with him for weeks and you know what he told Tina Mackin today? I was a good friend. A good friend!â
âOuch.â
âYep. Iâm just a good buddy that blows you in the parking lot before school. Fuck him and his friendship.â
I nod in agreement, but sheâs not done. I listen to my best friend rant for the next twenty minutes on the way to the farm. I learn more about Bennett and his dick than I ever wanted to. Funny how she had no complaints about his performance yesterday.
